The Brand Should Inform Everything
Thinking about the connection between Brand (with the capital B) and the content it publishes, the main thing I see is people treating the two as separate entities.
Brand over here, content over there, with each doing its own thing independent of one another.
That's the wrong approach.
Brand isn't something that can be an afterthought when it comes to marketing. Brand is the layer underneath everything that, when it’s done right, influences every touchpoint, every message, and every piece of content.
Realistically, a logo and a single value proposition isn't enough. A brand requires a clear narrative that sits as the foundation of every piece of content, every article, and every slide deck.
And it has to start with insight.
When you build from a genuine understanding of your audience (what they care about, how they talk, what they need), Brand becomes the connective tissue between each decision. It stops being just a style guide that gathers dust and starts being the reason your content feels like it comes from somewhere real.
Without that foundation, something sadly all too common happens…
Posts get published, carousels get made and signed off, and the calendar stays full with tonnes of content… and none of it achieves anything.
Because when content is made without the key messaging of the brand as the backbone, none of it connects back to a clear idea of who you are and why that should matter to anyone.
How to Actually Build It
This is something I’ve been doing for the best part of a decade at this point, and it’s something I see so many brands get wrong.
Start with audience research. Not generic assumptions about your audience, but rather actual insight into what they care about, what language they use, and what problems they have.
From there, build a messaging framework. This isn’t a list of bog-standard values to put in a file and never look at again, but instead a clear narrative of what the brand stands for and what it’s here to do. Plus, more importantly, how that shows up across the content you make.
Then — and this is the bit that almost always gets skipped — share it.
You’d be surprised at the number of clients I’ve worked with who don’t know what their brand is all about. If you don’t know what the backbone of the brand is, neither will any of the content creators you work with (in-house or freelance).
Brand isn't a luxury layer you add when the budget allows… it's the thing that makes your content worth making and, for the audience, worth reading.
